THE STORY OF HEMITHEA

History

The story behind the AquaHemithea name and Marmaris’ ancient connection with water.

Marmaris and its waters.

Hemithea (Hemitya) was an Anatolian woman with Hittite-Luwian roots who lived in Marmaris in the fourth century BC.

Historical accounts describe Hemithea using spring waters from the foothills of Eren Mountain for bathing and drinking treatments, bringing relief and healing to people suffering from various illnesses.

Those who recovered with remarkable speed returned home and told others who were ill about Hemithea’s healing waters.

The number of people travelling to her, particularly women, grew across Anatolia and other cities. In response, the people of ancient Marmaris established a treatment centre using these waters, the remains of which survive today.
